Abstract

This thesis is an attempt to explore the current understanding of the home, as well as the concepts of Lean Urbanism and Pink Zoning, through the frameworks of architecture and urban planning. Detroit is a very unique and invigorating place for development at this time, and is a place that could greatly be transformed through the upgrading, or “lessening of the red tape” that exists in its current zoning ordinances. Paying attention to the principles of Lean Urbanism and Pink Zoning, while keeping in mind what makes a place feel inhabitable and comfortable to those who call it home, was the ultimate goal of this investigation. By infusing aspects of areas that experience a greater population density and variation of housing typologies, such as Boston and New York City, this thesis displays an Urban Planning and Live-Work style housing proposal for the Woodbridge neighborhood of Detroit.
